US Universities Application Process

The Common Application, commonly known as the CommonApp, is a widely utilised platform facilitating the application process for multiple colleges and universities in the United States through a single application. Alongside basic information, applicants are typically required to submit various documents such as academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, resumes, and standardised test scores, in addition to the CommonApp essay. There is no limit to the number of schools students can apply to, however every US school requires an additional set of college-specific supplemental essays.

1. Holistic Admissions

• US universities assess applicants on various criteria beyond academic grades.
• Schools consider academic grades, test scores, extra-curricular activities, personal essays, and other achievements holistically, considering various aspects of each application in context.

2. Know the Application Deadlines

• Early Decision (ED): Deadline is typically in November.
• Early Action (EA): Deadline is typically in November/December, sometimes as early as mid-October.
• Regular Decision (RD): Deadline typically by January 1.

3. Utilise Common Application Platform

• Common App: Accepted by over 1000 colleges.
• Allows students to fill out one application and submit it to multiple colleges.
• Some schools like MIT, UCLA, UC Berkeley and Georgetown University do not accept the Common App, requiring separate applications through their websites.

4. Prepare Required Materials

• Personal Information
• Transcript: Last 4 years’ transcript.
• GPA/IB Scores
• SAT/ACT Scores
• Common Application and Supplementary Essay
• Letters of Recommendation
• Extracurricular Activities/Volunteer Activities
• TOEFL/IELTS Score(if required)

5. Create a Balanced College List

• Include a mix of reach, target, and safety schools.

• Safety Schools: Colleges where admission is almost certain.
• Aim for 8 to 10 schools on your list, potentially increasing to 12 for highly competitive colleges.

UK Universities Application Process

The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service(UCAS) portal serves as the primary application platform for undergraduate programs across UK institutions. It streamlines the application process by allowing students to apply to up to five courses at various universities using a single application. Alongside course selections, applicants are required to submit a personal statement and academic references, which are integral components of the UCAS application.

• UK universities typically rely on minimum grade requirements for admission.
• Admissions decisions are primarily based on academic performance and the personal statement.

2. Know the Application Deadlines

• UCAS Application Deadline: Typically in end-January for most undergraduate courses.
• Some courses may have earlier deadlines, particularly for Oxford and Cambridge (usually in October).

3. Complete UCAS Application

• Applicants can apply to up to five courses through UCAS.
• Submit personal details, academic qualifications, and a personal statement.

4. Gather Required Materials

• Personal Information
• Transcript: Academic qualifications and exam results.
• Predicted Grades: For courses with pending exam results.
• Reference Letters: Typically from teachers or counsellors.

SG Universities Application Process

National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and Singapore Management University (SMU) each maintain their own university application portals. Applicants aspiring to study at NUS, NTU, or SMU must adhere to each university’s guidelines, ensuring timely and accurate submission of credentials through the respective portals.
