US Universities Application Process

The Common Application, commonly known as the CommonApp, is a widely utilised platform facilitating the application process for multiple colleges and universities in the United States through a single application. Alongside basic information, applicants are typically required to submit various documents such as academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, resumes, and standardised test scores, in addition to the CommonApp essay. There is no limit to the number of schools students can apply to, however every US school requires an additional set of college-specific supplemental essays.

  • Schools consider academic grades, test scores, extra-curricular activities, personal essays, and other achievements holistically, considering various aspects of each application in context.
  1. Know the Application Deadlines
  • Early Decision (ED): Deadline is typically in November.
  • Early Action (EA): Deadline is typically in November/December, sometimes as early as mid-October.
  • Regular Decision (RD): Deadline typically by January 1.
  1. Utilise Common Application Platform
  • Common App: Accepted by over 1000 colleges.
  • Allows students to fill out one application and submit it to multiple colleges.
  • Some schools like MIT, UCLA, UC Berkeley and Georgetown University do not accept the Common App, requiring separate applications through their websites.
